An estimated P3.8-million worth of illegal drugs were seized by agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA)-Negros Island Region (NIR) during a fiesta at Colon Extension, Barangay Taclobo in Dumaguete City on March 4.
The one kilogram of suspected shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) was yielded by construction worker Genaro Amorin Jr., 22, following a drug bust around 5:50 p.m.
Amorin was arrested by joint operatives of PDEA-NIR and Intelligence Branch of Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office (Norppo).
Lawyer Roselyn Borja, officer-in-charge of PDEA-NIR, said Amorin was under the agency's drugs watchlist.
He was placed under surveillance for a few months, she added.
The recovered illegal substance was wrapped in a newspaper and sealed with masking tape, and placed inside small red ham bag.
The supply is believed to have come from Cebu City, Borja said.
A son of a former vice mayor of Pontevedra in Negros Occidental was arrested after he sold a sachet of shabu to a PDEA agent in Barangay Buenavista Gebong in said town.
Borja identified the subject as Aleghere Parroco, who is under the watchlist of PDEA.
Parroco yielded five sachets of shabu worth P2,000.
Borja said they conducted an operation against Parroco after they received information that the latter is still engaging in selling of illegal drugs.
He surrendered to police through Oplan Tokhang in July 2016, but failed to stop his illegal activities, she added.
Borja said they monitored his activities since last month.
Both Amorin and Parroco will face charges for violation of Sections 5 and 11 of Republic Act 9165 or Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
Amorin is detained at Dumaguete City Police Station while Parroco is in the custody of Pontevedra Municipal Police Station. (Glazyl Y. Masculino/SunStar Bacolod)
