AS PART of the Fire Prevention Month celebration themed “Buhay at ari-arian ay pahalagahan, ibayong pag-iingat ay sa sariling pamamahay simulan,” fire officers are conducting fire safety awareness campaign in the different barangays of the city.
Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Inspector Jesus Yango of the Baguio City Fire Station (BCFS) said they are doing the campaign to remind the public to avoid fire incidents.
“We are making this awareness campaign so they will be informed. There are also fire trucks that will be roaming around the city, in different barangays to show visibility,” Yango said.
The city’s fire station will also conduct training for the different barangay officials and tanods to be skilled as first responders during fire incidents.
“We will have some training for some residents so they would know what to do in case of fire,” Yango added.
Some 75 fire incidents were recorded by the BCFS, mostly structural, gas and electrical in nature although no casualties were recorded. In 2015, the fire station had 77 fire incidents recorded.
Yango said the common cause of fire incidents in the city is due to unattended cooking and gas stove leaks followed by faulty electrical wiring caused by octopus connections and unattended lit candles.
“We can avoid these when we follow some rules. Avoid also smoking in your bed especially when you are drunk. Make sure to turn off the main switch of your electric connection when leaving to ensure that there are no running appliances which are consuming electrical power,” Yango said.
The fire officer added, parents should keep lighters and matches from children while car owners are advised to bring their fire extinguishers when travelling which will help to stop vehicle fire incident especially during long distance drives.
