Espedilla: How to get away from distraction

DEAR Dr. Fritz,

Good day to you. I hope you are well. Please call me Sweetie Amie. I am a college student. I am writing to you because I have been distracted by social media lately, like Facebook and online games. The problem is I usually spend more of my time to them than my studies.

I know that I shouldn’t do this. But they are really so tempting and I really find them so irresistible. I tried to keep these things away, but, my mind just doesn’t seem to keep quiet. It kept on prodding me to look at my Facebook account and go for those endless games. I am anxious that I would end up having failing grades. Do you have any recourse on how to quiet my mind from these technology distractions?

Thank you and may God bless you.

Sweetie Amie

Dear Sweetie Amie,

I know there had been an explosion of new high technology nowadays, especially in the last ten years (hehe… sounds familiar?) and because of these, there had been an avalanche of Facebook posts and very tempting games. All of these could naturally distract you. I can understand that. As a matter of fact, research has shown that these can have a negative effect on your mind.

You just can’t just simply get away with technology because this will help you in your learning too. But, you should only know how to interact with technology and use these scientific know-hows to your advantage. They do not have to be bad for you. Here are some tips to quiet your mind.

1. Know your priorities.

If your studies are your priorities then show and prove it. I know Facebook is very tempting to you especially those games that are prodding you to play with them. But, they are just there, they will never leave you. However, time is of the essence. If you won’t study and just let your time be spent alone on Facebook and games, you will end up failing your studies. The worst is if you will end up repeating a subject. That is surely a waste of damn good time, money, and effort.

Remember, you don’t get good grades by spending your day in the social media or playing games. It really takes a matter of discipline and tons of commitment to get away with all those distractions.

Hmmm… as much as I wanted to talk more about the tips and tricks of the trade to make you regain your focus, but since we lack enough space this time, let me then continue this in my next issue. Until then!
