14,704 jaywalkers caught since Dec. 2016 in Davao

THE Davao City Transportation and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) recorded a total of 14,704 jaywalkers from December 2, 2016 to March 3, 2017.

CTTMO Anti-Jaywalking Unit member Donald R. Estoquia said most of these jaywalkers were caught along San Pedro Street fronting San Pedro Cathedral, Unitop, Landbank and also at the University of Mindanao, Bolton Street.

He said their office plans to put up more pedestrian lanes and are also carefully studying potential areas where these pedestrian lanes will be placed.

"We are conducting surveys, inspecting streets without pedestrian lanes. We are also listening to recommendations and suggestions for consideration and evaluation," he said.

He also said that repainting the pedestrian lanes are done in areas where jaywalking is rampant.

"Lisud kaayo mag-implement ug jaywalking ordinance tapos ang pedestrian lanes kay dili klaro (It will be hard to implement anti-jaywalking ordinance when the pedestrian lanes are not clear) he said, adding that it will be biased on the side of the jaywalkers.

The anti-jaywalking unit of CTTMO is currently composed of 19 personnel, manning some 15 pedestrian lanes.

"Since we do not have citation tickets, we are still in the process of giving out information for the jaywalkers and during the time of apprehension, we hand out invitation to jaywalkers to attend orientation done every Friday of the week, in order for them to be educated about the ordinance and also to inform others about it," he said.

He added that the citation tickets that will impose proper penalties for jaywalkers will be released in April.
