Abra tightens security for 100th year

ABRA police have intensified security during the 100th Founding Anniversary celebration after a stabbing incident, killed one, March 6 at the Abra Sports Complex.

According to a belated police report street dancers from Tineg were watching the program after having their dinner the sport complex when a 17-year-old suddenly punched one of the participants.

The suspect suddenly took out a knife tucked on his waist and stabbed everyone who got close to him.

One was killed while five others were injured including two minors.

Jesus Alfredo, 27, from Canayan, Tineg, Abra was declared dead on arrival by attending physicians at the Abra Provincial Hospital.

Other victims were rushed to the same hospital, together with the suspect, before he was brought to Bangued Police Station.

"Though we cannot perfectly cover all area, we have a tight security in the Abra Sports Complex. Wherein, we've utilized more than a hundred composite security units," Abra provincial police director Senior Superintendent Alexander Tagum said.

Despite the stabbing incidents, Abra’s 27 municipalities was all out during the Centennial Day parade Wednesday morning.

With the theme, "Abra, @ 100.Tradition. Celebration.Innovation," each contingent marched their floats designed with Abranian bamboo products such as baskets, hats and fans boasting their rich cultural heritage.

Governor Maria Jocelyn Bernos said, Abra reaching 100 years is another milestone and seeks the help of her constituents towards a more developed province.

"We are pushing for our bamboo industry to also prosper. We hope our bamboo products to have more innovations for the continued livelihood of our constituents so Abra will be known as the bamboo capital,” she said.

Bernos added the province is aggressively promoting destinations assuring tourists Abra is safe.

Other events during the weeklong festival which ends on the 12 include street dancing parade, beauty pageant, women's group parade, fashion show featuring the best creations of Abra fashion designers, PBA Legends exhibition game, awarding of Abra centenarians and an agro-industrial trade fair.
