Davao Optima bags men's, women's crowns

DAVAO Optima swept the 2nd Davao Doctors College (DDC) Volleyball Cup men's and women's titles Sunday at the DDC Gym.

Davao Optima men's spikers escaped a 27-25, 25-23, 27-25 victory over Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) in their titular showdown officiated by Balibolista de Dabaw.

Allen Sales of Davao Optima was hailed as men's most valuable player (MVP) as his teammates Jimson Olais, Edmar Flores clinched the best blocker and best attacker awards, respectively. Sales was also named best setter.

Davao Optima bounced back from a first set loss to beat University of Mindanao (UM) Davao, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17 in men's semifinals to earn a finals berth opposite HCDC that easily disposed of UM Tagum, 25-20, 25-22, in their other semis encounter.

HCDC's veteran player Calvin Sarte, for his part, copped the best server title while Eli Ancog was best libero.

In the distaff side, multi-titled Davao Optima collared Philippine National Police (PNP), 25-20, 25-21, 25-23, for the women champion's trophy.

Power spiker Liezl Manatad romped away with the MVP and best attacker honors as fellow Davao Optima volleybelles Maricel Cabus (best setter) and Trixie Laroga (best libero) were also feted.

In the battle for third, UM Tagum overcame UM Davao, 25-14, 26-24, in men's division while UM Davao lady spikers claimed the bronze by beating HCDC, 25-18, 25-20.
