The working hub for animation

AN ANIMATION studio is where the magic begins.

The workspace of geniuses behind our favorite cartoons begins with the animator’s idea being put into fluid action.

Raul Boncan Jr., Chief Executive Officer of both Xentrix Toons and CSDA uses the analogy of a manufacturing company. “Let’s say the automotive industry, there is a starting line where all processes emanate. There is the assembly line from raw materials for different parts of the car are brought to specific assembly lines. For example we have engine parts, interior, upholstery etc., assembly lines and once each task is completed it is placed on the main assembly area to be put together to make a whole functioning automobile.”

Boncan relays the animation industry follows the same discipline beginning with a concept laid down to materialize in a storyboard.

The Storyboard and the Animatics

This is where the Creative Director establishes & analyzes the show style and its demands. He plans the pipeline needs in the Pre-Production departments like Lay-out and Background.

The Pre-Animation Department

The Director plans and maps out the other departments guidelines for scene builds and rigging. He then ascertains the degree animation difficulty, depending on the show style and the software that will be used for the Production department. This is where clean up can happen and is done. Not all animation will require that, it really depend on the animation style required.

Post Production Department

Once all the processes are made, the Post Production department for Compositing or Special effects team now stitches all the scenes together.

The number of scenes per show & episode vary from 280 scenes to 300 plus for a 22-minute episode.

A studio can house as few as 40 to 60 artists working on the episode of one show.

At Xentrix Toons there are more animators working on different shows all at the same time.

Boncan said “We are now on a high speed expansion mode and we just opened a new satellite studio outside Baguio because of the successes of our twin programs, we will also build another school & training center in Makati and Lipa.”

There is now a continuous gathering of talent for Xentrix Toons to be able to fill positions and train new animators for projects lined up.

There are shifting schedules for Xentrix pool of experts from morning until night to fit the need and preference of the team.
