ALMOST a hundred selected person deprived of liberty (PDL) from Baguio City Jail, together with some of the jail officers, were given disaster preparedness tips through the Office of Civil Defense Cordillera (OCD-CAR) Information Officer Franzes Ivy Carasi at Baguio City Jail Multi-Purpose Hall on March 13.

Topics on the country's Disaster Risk Profile, Philippine's disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) system, and disaster preparedness tips on different hazards like tropical cyclones, landslide, and earthquake were communicated to the participants.

Carasi said PDLs have also the right to be educated on DRRM.

“We are aiming to increase the number of people with upgraded understanding on risk reduction. Since we are prone to hazards, one way of reducing the risk is to level up our capacities,” she added.

Disaster Information for Nationwide Awareness (Project DINA) videos of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) were also shown to detainees.

“Pwede naming i-apply ang mga natutunan namin dito sa loob at magagamit din paglabas namin dito sa kulungan,” said one of the participants.

Jail Officer 1 Ma. Rhealine Guives said they are planning to conduct the same activity annually.

“They will not stay here anyway so why not make their stay productive,” Guives added.

OCD-CAR also provided information and education campaign materials such as leaflets, posters, and civil defense publication for detainees and jail officers’ consumption. (Mary Anne Ruga and Elija Maree Santos/OCD-CAR)
