Espina: The Zonta 1 vision and programs

THE Zonta Club 1 received the Philippines Foundation Inc. Perlas Awards, and recently the 2015 Cebu City Charter Award as an Outstanding Civic Club with a noble vision translated into sustainable programs.

Nominated by Speechcom International, supported by documentation of the leadership and long- and short-term projects of empowered Zontians, spanning decades of accomplishments from the founding president Dr. Suga Sotto Yuvienco and the chain of past presidents, Bonifacio, Rodil, Sanchez, Espina, Cunanan, Verallo, Avila, Streegan, Yuvienco, Tanchan, Chan, Schaap, Ebrada, Colina, Bernabe, (I hope I did not miss a past president), and presently, the indefatigable Nellie Chiu, Zonta 1 continues to garner recognition in its advocacies in opposing VAW (Violence Against Women) and related activities: education and scholarship; livelihood and entrepreneurship; health and wellness with barangay linkages.

The Zonta 1 has also been a forerunner in the promotion of the performing arts raising funds (seed money) for projects: the Glamour and Glitz 1 and 2; Fashion and Rhythm, Night of the Oscars; Women Legends; Legends of Men; then the Fun Run, with multi-sectoral linkages. It has partnered in some major projects with Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education 7, Province and City of Cebu, Academe, like the University of the Visayas; also with Forward, Speechcom, Team Philippines, Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry with P.E.O.P.L.E Success Stories, and Culture of Tourism to promote value formation, leadership and decorum.

The month of November had been declared Zonta Month by both the City and Province of Cebu, through a concept proposal of MCE, (strongly supported by Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale; and councilor Margot Osmeña), during the terms of Bernabe and Colina, who also helped in making Zonta 1 a non-governmental organization with the help of the Zonta Board (like Canoy, Binghay and the past and current past presidents).

The Zonta 1 expands its integrated programs with the pioneering and new Zontians, a council of advisers (past presidents); creative officers, project chairs and vibrant membership.

In a nutshell, the photos on this page catch the durable Zontians in action.

Community livelihood project

The memorandum of agreement signed between two barangays in Cebu City, namely Budlaan and Talamban, last Sept. 8, 2014 was renewed for the continued community livelihood project.

The committee introduced new craft items such as soap making, household uniforms, crocheted items such as napkins, champagne glass and tissue holders, placements and specially designed aprons and recycled bags.
