Mining engineers annual meet in Davao

THE Mindanao Association of Mining Engineers (MAEM) Inc. is set to hold its 21st Annual Mining Symposium at Waterfront Insular Hotel in Lanang in Davao City on June 11-13.

With the theme "Overcoming Adversities in Energy and Mineral Development thru Responsible Mining," Engr. Lopez Castillo, board of trustee of the Philippine Society of Mining Engineers, said they are expecting about 300 participants to the symposium.

The event is sponsored by the Philippine Society of Mining Engineers (PSME) in cooperation with Chapter Mindanao's Association of Mining Engineers, Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) in Davao Region, and Department of Energy (DOE)-Davao.

"This is a three-day conference that will include symposium, general assembly of the mining engineers with regards to the success stories of mining operations in different aspects on environment, development and also from commissioning, which includes energy, renewable, quarry operations, and mining engineering law," Castillo said.

Among the topics to be discussed are the Mindanao Power Situation, Policies Governing Renewable Energy Resource Developments in the Philippines, Coal Operating Contracts (COC), Responsible Mining in the Philippines, Geotechnical Hazards, Best Available Technology for Trailing Management, and High Pressure Acid Leaching Process for Nickel Ore.

Also to be discussed are the Roles of Multi-Partite Monitoring Team (MMT) in Philippine Mineral Industry, Harmonizing Mine Development and Environmental Enhancement and Final Mine Rehabilitation and Decommissioning Plan of the TVI-Siocon Project, Castillo said.

"This is very helpful for the mining engineers because they could see the different experiences, success stories of the mining operations from other professionals that we have invited. From here meron silang matutunan na pupwedeng gamitin nila, because mining operation is a multi-discipline operation," Castillo said.

He added that the symposium is pushing for safe and responsible mining in various regions in the Philippines.
