Replica cake feeds thousands

LA TRINIDAD relived its moniker as home to the world’s largest strawberry shortcake after recreating the cake which made it to the Guinness Book of World Record in 2004

Weighing 2500 kilograms, the replica cake was at 1.5 meters high, 2.4 meters long which produced nearly 16,000 slices and served as the centerpiece to the town’s 36th celebration of Strawberry Festival on Sunday which also featured a street dancing and float parade.

Town officials have yet to issue the final count of how many individuals were served during the festivity.

The town bagged the title in the Guinness for baking the World’s Largest Strawberry Shortcake weighing 9,622.24 kilograms on March 20, 2004, and serving more than 10,000 individuals.

Sunday's parade also saw non - motorized floats parading the main thoroughfare of Benguet's capital town.

The float parade was one of the highlights of the 36th Strawberry Festival themed, "Sustaining the Fruits of Trinidad's Agro-eco Tourism."

Fifteen pushed and pulled floats paraded the kilometer stretch of the main highway and ended up at the Municipal Hall Quadrangle for final judging and public viewing.

La Trinidad Mayor Romeo Salda said they wanted to present environmentally- friendly and beautiful floats adding during the executive meeting, it was suggested that the floats will be either pushed, pulled or animal drawn to avoid contributing to air pollution.

“We would like to show to the community that even with the fast development happening in La Trinidad, it is not too late to take simple actions to ensure clean air for the next generation,” Salda explained.

The floats were also made of recycled materials like plastic bottles, plastic caps, scrap metals, among others.

Out of the 15 competing floats, five were entered into the recyclable category while the other floats were entered in the floral category.

First price in the float category will receive P50,000 while the second and third gets P40,000 and P30,000 respectively while a P10,000 consolation prizes will be up for grabs.

Salda said at least 5,000 people lined up the road to watch the floats pass, which is an annual crowd drawer of the festival and believes there is still room for improvement to the concept of non-motorized floats.

“I believe we have achieved our goal to help reduce air pollution during our parade but we still have to look at the suggestions of the participants since this is the first non-motorized float parade,” Salda said

La Trinidad is composed of sixteen barangays – Alapang, Alno, Ambiong, Bahong, Balili, Beckel, Betag, Bineng, Cruz, Lubas, Poblacion, Pico, Puguis, Shilan, Tawang and Wangal. (Shena Golosino with a report from PNA)
