11-year-old Dabawenya qualifies to Kids world golf

DABAWENYA golfer Alessandra Zozobrado-Nagayo is set to represent the country in the US Kids Golf World Championship in Pinehurst, North Carolina on July 29 to August 2.

Alessandra earned a ticket to the world championships after she emerged champion in the girls 11 years old division in the recently concluded US Kids Golf World Championship International Qualifiers held at the Orchard Golf and Country Club in Cavite.

Councilor Rachel Zozobrado-Nagayo, Alessandra's mother, told reporters in an interview Monday that her daughter's training is on full gear since it will be the first time that she will compete in a major tournament.

"Naga-practice siya almost every day from Monday to Saturday sa Apo Golf and Country Club. Nagaapil na siya sa mga inter-school tournaments didto sa Australia pero this [US Kids Golf World Championship] is her first major tournament (She is practicing almost every day from Monday to Saturday at Apo Golf and Country Club. She has been joining inter-school tournament in Australia but this will be her first major tournament)," the councilor said.

She also said that Alessandra will join the Philippine Councilors League (PCL) Open Golf Tournament to be held at the Apo Gold and Country Club on June 12 that will serve as her tune-up game.

"It does not hurt to practice almost every day but she also needs to compete not only in her division but in the open division so that she will have more exposure," the councilor added.

The US Kids Golf World Championship is the largest and most prestigious tournament for golfers 12 years old and below. Some 1,400 young golfers converge during the annual golf fest.
