Militant groups hold protest vs Asean meeting

MILITANT groups in Negros Occidental held a protest action in Bacolod City on Wednesday against the staging of the two-day 15th Meeting of the Asean Senior Officials/Ministers Responsible for Information at SMX Convention Center.

At least 150 protestors marched from San Sebastian Cathedral to San Juan Street going to SM City Bacolod Wednesday to air their sentiments.

Some of their members from northern and southern Negros failed to join the protest in the city after they were stopped by security forces at E.B. Magalona town and Bago City, respectively.

Those who were able to join the protest were blocked by the 200-man Civil Disturbance Management team at Rizal Street to prevent them from entering the meeting venue, but were allowed to hold a rally for 30 to 40 minutes.

Senior Superintendent Rolando Miranda, chief of Regional Directorial Staff of Police Regional Office-18 in Negros Island Region, talked to Christian Tuayon, secretary-general of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-Negros, and other protestors to discuss the procedure and limitation of their protest action.

The groups’ 10 speakers were given five minutes each.

Tuayon said they do not welcome the delegates in the city as they consider them the reason of the suffering of the Filipinos especially the small workers in the sugar industry.

Tuayon said the city promoted tourism for the arrival and accommodation of the delegates, but rejected the urban poor by removing the eyesore in the streets.

He also said that the policemen who are supposed to protect the people are now causing them difficulty.

Tuayon added that Asean member-countries implement a neo-liberal type of economy that causes problem to the country.
