WITH the decline of water supply in the summer season, the Baguio Water District (BWD) is set to reduce distribution among consumers.
BWD general manager Salvador Royeca said demand during the summer may reach 64,329 cubic meters per day but only 44,774 cubic meters/day will be available.
"Pababa ang water source ngayong summer kaya kailangang ding magbawas ng distribution sa ibang areas,” said Royeca.
Royeca said the BWD is keen on pushing for the bulk water project that would solve the lack of water supply in the Summer Capital.
A rain harvesting facility is also being eyed inside the Busol Watershed and the renovation of the Santo Tomas Rain Basin.
The BWD official added these projects are seen to cover the city’s demand for water.
"These will reduce the gap of water supply based on the supply and demand, talagang tumataas ang demand," as Royeca explained the population is also increasing including establishments.
Royeca meanwhile called on the public to help in the protection of the remaining watershed in the city.
Around 43 percent of the fencing of Busol watershed was completed to prevent encroachment of informal settlers and illegal loggers.
Royeca meanwhile said BWD has yet to deliberate on their next move following the decision of the Pollution Adjudication Board (PAB) of Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) regarding the illegal tree cutting activity in Santo Tomas which affected the water source of the city.
"We still have to talk with the board," Royeca said.
Royeca added with the different restoration programs in Santo Tomas, the water source has fully recovered as BWD personnel continue monitoring debris from the mountain affecting the water source.
BWD is expecting more the 379,293 population of the city in 2022, with demand expecting to reach 77,804 cubic meters per day.
