Sub cable system to boost internet connectivity

GLOBE Telecom clients in Davao City and the rest of the country will soon experience better internet connectivity after the successful landing of the Southeast Asia-United States (SEA-US) submarine cable system Friday morning in Talomo village, Davao City.

The cable is connected to the Globe cable landing station in Talomo village, which also houses the Power Feed Equipment that is necessary to run the system.

At a project cost of more than P12 billion, the 15,000 kilometer cable system will consist of two fiber pairs with an initial design capacity of 20 terabits per second and will use the latest in submarine fiber-optic technology with 100 gigabits per second transmission equipment per pair.

This capacity will help meet the growing demand for mobile internet use of Filipinos. It will benefit the outsourcing and offshoring industry, the major contact centers, business process outsourcing providers, global-financial institutions, among others that require very large bandwidth as Philippines has become the preferred destination for these companies.

“Globe Telecom supports the IT-BPM (Information Technology-Business Processing Management) industry and Davao City has become the regional center of all businesses and commerce in Mindanao and in the country as well,” vice president for the Enterprise Business Product Management Division of Globe Cindy Salaya said.

This system is designed and engineered to avoid earthquake prone areas in East Asia.

It is expected to ease the country’s dependence on international cable systems routed through Luzon and prevent a repeat of the 2008 incident where major international cables were broken due to the Taiwan earthquake thereby, leaving the Philippines isolated for a few days in terms of internet connectivity.

The submarine cable project is being undertaken by Globe and other companies part of the SEA-US consortium such as PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia International (Telin), RAM Telecom International, Hawaiian Telcom, Teleguam Holdings and Telkom USA.

It will link the five areas of Manado in Indonesia, Davao in Philippines, Piti in Guam, and Honolulu in Hawaii and Los Angeles, California in the US.

The project, which was started on 2014, is targeted to be fully operational by the end of June this year.
