Ranario dominates ‘Rising Star’ chess

VETERAN Alden Ranario scored 5.5 points to rule the 2nd Developmental Chess League of Rising Stars on Sunday at the Capitol Chess Park here.

Youthful Cressler Bruce Gabing, who enrolled this semester at Corpus Christi School, placed solo second with 5 points in the day-long rapid tourney sponsored by the NorMin Chess/Queen’s Gambit Gold in cooperation with Explore MisOr Chess Cooperative.

Occupying third and fourth spots with identical 4.5 points were Nelson Lacson and Noel Paguidopon.

Sharing fifth to 9th places at 4 points each were newly-minted Bonbon Summer chess titlist David Rey Ancheta, also from Corpus Christi, Estanislao Jerusalem, Alrenz Dale Borres, Julian Raymund Suniel and Vanessa Magno.

Geniel Gonzaga won the Bucholz tiebreaker over two others 3.5 pointers to round up the top-10 circle in the Sunday chess showdown that attracted close to 40 woodpushers.

“For his feat, Alden Ranario is now promoted to super B category,” shared arbiter Lorenzo Cuizon.(LLS)
