Roxas: Cases should be filed vs Kentex owners

LOCAL Government Secretary Manuel Roxas II said Tuesday that owners of Kentex Manufacturing Inc. factory in Valenzuela City should be held liable for the May 13 fire that killed 72 factory workers.

"Sa aking pananaw, ang may pananagutan ay ang Kentex at 'yung nagpahintulot na mag-operate ang Kentex kahit may mga nakitang violations sa Fire Code ang Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)," Roxas said.

Roxas said that proof of the supposed violation was BFP's non-issuance of fire safety inspection certificate to Kentex.

On Monday, criminal and administrative complaints were filed against Roxas, Labor Secretary Rozalinda Baldoz and others before the Office of the Ombudsman for their alleged failure to ensure safe work conditions for the workers of the slipper factory.

Complaints were also filed against Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) National Capital Region (NCR) Director Alex Avila, Dole-NCR Labor Compliance Officer Engineer Joseph Vedasto, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) fire chief Director Ariel Barayuga, BFP-NCR director Senior Superintendent Sergio Malupeng Soriano Jr., Valenzuela City fire marshal Superintendent Mel Jose Lagan, and Fire Safety Enforcement Section chief Ed Groover Oculam.

Roxas said he has yet to get a copy of the complaint but he respects the move of the survivors and families of the victims. (Sunnex)
