Free summer grassroots training to be launched

THE Cebu City Sports Commission will launch the much awaited annual Free Summer Grassroots Training Program today at the Cebu City Sports Center Gym at 3 p.m.

Also to be launched today is the newest program of the sports commission, the Jr. Olympic Development Games, which intends to make Cebu City athletes stronger in national competitions such as the Batang Pinoy Games.

The Free Grassroots Sports training program, now on its seventh year, will start on April 17 and will culminate on May 13 with a competition for the participants of the different sports events.

This year, an addition to the program is the air rifle shooting, where kids test their skills in shooting using Miguel Tajuelo’s modified rifle design.

Unlike last year, when the culminating competitions were held at the Cebu City Sports Center, it will be done at the respective venues this year to ensure maximum participation.

The sports to be taught include arnis, archery, badminton, beach volleyball, boxing chess, dancesports, futsal, karatedo, lawn tennis, pencak silat, sepak takraw, scrabble, softball/baseball, table tennis, taekwondo, touch rugby, track and field, weightlifting and wushu.

The venues are Cebu City Central School quadrangle, Hipodromo Elementary School gym, Lahug ES gym, Mabolo ES gym, Tejero ES gym, Zapatera ES gym, Bo. Luz ES gym and Talamban ES gym for the north barangays while Don Vicente Rama Memorial ES gym, Pardo ES Gym, Labangon ES Gym Mambaling ES Gym, Punta Princesa ES Gym, Inayawan ES Gym, Guadalupe ES Gym, San Nicolas ES gym and the Cebu City Sports Institute.
