Mati City hosts frisbee, skimboarding, beach volleyball

THE Visit Davao Fun Sale (VDFS) in partnership with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Mati City and the Department of Tourism (DOT) Davao Region will hold three exciting sport events starting April 16.

In a press conference held at the Habi at Kape at Abreeza Ayala Mall, VDFS execom chair Benjie Lizada, who was joined by DOT regional director Robert Alabado, Mati City administrative officer Dashiel Indelible, Amihan sa Dahican spokesperson Grace Plata, VDFS ultimate frisbee invitational tournament organizer Brylle Quimintan, and beach volleyball competition organizer Abet Bernan, said as the VDFS celebrates its fourth year, huge selection of events and activities will be staged this summer including the frisbee challenge and national skim boarding competition set on April 22 to 23 and the volleyball competition on May 19 to 21.

The summer campaign focuses on the region's eco-tourism destinations.

"A lot of people know Mati to be a surfer's haven, but it's more than that. There are other activities and fun events that we can do in Mati too," Alabado said, adding that they will ensure to put a special spotlight to Mati as part of the best places to visit in the region.

"True to our tourism slogan "I love Mati", our guests will surely love Mati after this exciting event spread," Indelible said, thankful for the partnership with VDFS and DOT.

Plata, for her part, bared that the first National Skimboarding Competition is expected to attract some 100 participants all over the country.

"Skim strongholds like Zambales, Argao, and Samar are also expected to join," Plata said. The event, according to her, will serve as qualifier for the international competition set this year. Mati's very own four-time international skimboarding champion is also seeing action.

Frisbee enthusiast will also have a chance to show their wares in the 1st Mayor Carlo Rabat Cup Ultimate Frisbee Invitational Tournament that will be graced by no less than Derek Ramsay himself.

Quimintan said this will be the first national frisbee event in Dahican Beach with teams from outside Davao Region vying for the title.

A total of 12 teams are expected to vie for honors with 15 players in each team.

The National Invitational Beach Volleyball Tournament, meanwhile, will feature the region's competitive spikers and Manila-based squads Generika-Ayala Lifesavers and F2 Logistics Cargo Movers. (ABM)
