Tabura scores win in Gullas Cup

NINE year old Aaron Kevin Tabura showed solid forms that would qualify him as the next champion tennis player of his clan and earned an easy victory over sixth seed Cloyd Canoy, 4-1, 4-1 in the 10-Under Unisex competition at the start of the 22nd Jose R. Gullas Cup Tennis Tournament held at the Citigreen Tennis Resort in Mambaling yesterday.

Meanwhile, over at Naga City Tennis Courts, Elijah Garcia survived a tough Francis Jay Ricaña, 7-6 (11-9), 6-4, in the 18-Under Boys category first round match.

The young Tabura is up for a tough assignment as he will be facing topseeded Chad Connor Cuizon in the next round.

Cuizon scored an easy win over Tabura’s cousin Scofield David Tabura, 4-1,4-0.

Also scoring opening day wins were AJ Mackenzie, who shut down David Ezra Sepulveda 4-0, 4-0, and John Vincent Cañete.

In the 18-Under division, joining Garcia in the next round are Vhon Tudtud, who scored a 6-0, 6-1 win over July Padilla; Venz Alforque, who defeated Dave Brigole 6-1, 6-2; John Clyde Patterson, who pulled off a 6-0, 6-1 win over Randolf Fernandez; and Francis Lambayan, after Jianrel Asilo retired in the second set after scoring 6-1 in the first set.

Garcia is also making a strong campaign in the 16-Under competition following his 6-2, 6-0 win over July Padilla.

Asilo also advanced to the next round of the Boys 16-Under division after elimination Jan Kho, following a 6-3, 6-3 win.

Alforque also advanced after a 6-3, 6-3 win over Gabriel Andre Trazo.

The other players who advanced to the next round in the Boys 16-U division are Lemuel Garbosa, who defeated Dave Brigole, 6-3, 6-1; Jayford Canono, who dominated Vincent Joshua Adlaon, 6-1, 6-1; Jake Dakay, who rallied from an opening set loss before dismissing Francis Rosales, 1-6, 6-4, 10-6; and Vinz Lominoque, who outlasted Daryl Jay Seno, 6-3, 6-4.

The other winners at the Citigreen courts were Ash Mackenzie who eliminated her opponent, 6-2, 6-0, and Senedel Gica, who defeated Princess Roma, 6-3, 6-4 in the 14U Girls class.

Febbie Abayan toppled Cristalle Marie Sampan , 6-1, 4-6, 10-7, to advance to the Girls 16-Under division.
