Death of ex-Bacolod mayor mourned

BACOLOD CITY Mayor Evelio Leonardia Sunday, April 2, said the city mourns the death of former Mayor Jose “Digoy” Montalvo Jr.

“We mourn the passing away of the man who started a festival for us,” the mayor said in a press statement.

“Former Mayor Digoy is gone, but he will never be forgotten. He will be smiling, and dancing, and drinking, and eating, and all told, having fun with us each time the MassKara Festival rolls into the city every October,” the mayor said.

Leonardia added: “We will remember him every time we dance with our masks, grateful that what he and his administration had started, to defy the gloom and doom that the city was going through 37 years ago, has now become the world-famous tourism event that it is today.”

The mayor said he was the officer of the Department of Tourism for Bacolod and Negros Occidental when he attended the meeting where Montalvo presided over the birth of the MassKara.

“We lost a statesman, a gentleman, and a visionary but we are a grateful people for the legacy he left. And even just for the MassKara alone, Mayor Digoy is now immortal,” Leonardia added.
