Baguio seeks better showing at National Games

BAGUIO City is out to surpass last year's 59-gold-medal haul in the Philippine National Games when the sports fest reels off on July 2 in Metro Manila.

Baguio's athletes also brought home 61 silvers and 53 bronzes from the 2014 Games.

"We are confident that we can break the 59 gold medals we produced last year, we are aware many other LGU's have been trying to improve their sport programs but still we are optimistic that Baguio will deliver a good showing this year," City sports coordinator Gaudencio Gonzales said.

Gonzales added Baguio will continue to bank on combative sports for golds.

Last year, the city's wushu athletes had 16-15-7 gold-silver-bronze haul, arnis had 11-6-4, taekwondo 8-7-6, wrestling 6-6-4, and muay thai 5-6-2.

Despite fielding a smaller contingent this year, Gonzales said the city will remain among the best competitors in the annual event.

Baguio will be sending 150 athletes to this year's Games.

Baguio will also have around 20 more entries who will compete in the coinciding Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled- National Games (PhilSpada).
