12 ‘Araw’ top swimmers

TWELVE most outstanding swimmers were named at the close of 80th Araw ng Dabaw Sports Festival Swimming Competition held at the Ateneo de Davao University Matina Campus Sunday, April 3.

Be-medaled Matthieu Adrien Tao along with Juan Antonio Mendoza, Airah Guadalquiver, Fritz Jun Rodriguez, Beatriz Ianne Laolao, Chad Russel Espinas, Gene Heart Quiambao, Juliana Marien Villanueva, Anton Rafaela Malayang, Liaa Margarette Amoguis, Al Rheim Saggap and Xian Chelsea Espinas were the top performers in the event presented by the Sports Development Division-City Mayors Office in partnership with League of Swimmers and Coaches.

Tao, who hauled six gold medals in the recent Davao Regional Athletic Association Meet in Mati City, ruled the boys 11 to 12 200-meter back stroke, 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 200m individual medley (IM), 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle.

State University College Athletic Association Nationals gold medalist Mendoza of the University of the Philippines Mindanao, for his part, topped the 18-above 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly, 200m IM, 50m backstroke, 50m freestyle and mixed 200m medley relay while Guadalquiver governed the girls 18-above 200m breaststroke, 200m IM, 50m freestyle and 200 freestyle relay.

Palarong Pambansa-bound Rodriguez, however, won the boys 16 to 17 100m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 200m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 200m breaststroke, 100m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 100m breaststroke.

Laolalo, meanwhile, ruled the girls 16 to 17 200m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 200m IM and 50m freestyle.

Espinas topped the boys 13 to 15 200m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 200m, freestyle, 50m freestyle and 200m medley relay while Quiambao dominated the girls 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 200m IM, 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle.

Juliana Marien Villanueva topped the girls 11 to 12 years-old 200m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 200m freestyle and the 200m IM.

Malayang swept the boys 9 to 10 100m, 200m freestyle, 200m IM and 50m backstroke even as Amoguis prevailed over in the girls side, winning the 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 200m breaststroke, 100m butterfly, 200m IM and 50m freestyle.

Saggap, meanwhile, seized the boys eight-under 100m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 200m freestyle and 100m breaststroke.

Xian Chelsea Espinas also emerged champion in the girls 8-under 100m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 200m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 200m breaststroke, 200 IM, 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle and 100m breaststroke events in the swimfest that drew a total of 229 entries.
