Baguio commemorates July 1990 quake

A COMPETITION for rescuers and response teams will be held in Baguio to mark the 25th anniversary of the 1990 earthquake.

"Rescue Mass Assembly for Rescue and Care for Humanity (MARCH)-Cordillera Challenge" will also be the flagship activity of the city government for National Disaster Consciousness Month beginning July 18.

The first two Rescue MARCH events were held in Metro Manila August last year and April this year.

The long-distance march, which will be from Loakan Airport to the Melvin Jones Grandstand, will feature obstacles such as road damage and obstructions designed to test the rescuers’ readiness during emergency or disaster situations like a magnitude 7.2 earthquake.

Competing are local rescue and emergency response groups from the Cordillera, nearby regions and as far as Metro Manila.

Each group must have seven members and are encouraged to bring their response vehicles, gear and equipment which will be exhibited at Loakan.

Interested participants may register online through the Facebook at www.facebook.com/RescueMarch from June 15 to July 15, or at the office of Baguio-Benguet Public Information and Civic Action Group (BB-PICAG) on Upper Session Road.
