A review of Asia’s Next Top Model Cycle 5 Episode 2

FILIPINOS are the biggest fans of everything that's related to beauty pageants and other contests of the like- especially if it is an international competition. They take it as a chance to be known to the world as a nation of fighters armed with pretty faces and determination. That's why Asia's Next Top Model is such a big deal to everyone.

To those who have been watching since the first cycle, or the second (because it is where the Filipina candidates started to be in those unavoidable catfights *coughs* hi Katarina and Jodilly*), it's always Team Filipina versus anyone who crosses a contestant from the Philippines.

But in Cycle 5, things were so different. After Anjelica's elimination on Episode 1, the remaining Filipinas in the competition, Jennica and Maureen weren't in good terms at all. Well, they used to be until Jennica thought Maureen is just getting by the competition because of her genetics, as what this cycle's model mentor coined, she's "just genetically blessed."

Jennica took it on Maureen for getting not so outstanding remarks. It was quite disappointing but let's not forget that this is still a competition and although they are both from the Philippines, they are still competing against each other.

Maybe Jennica just have to open herself a little more to the notion that she's not (yet) at her best performing self, that she has to let go of any issues that's holding her to improve and focus on herself. And Maureen, on the other hand, needs some beating up by Yu Tsai (nobody can do it better). As Cara said, she is just getting by in the competition because of her genetics, she should up her game and bring some fierceness in the table. At this point, I'd like to quote, Minh Tu from Vietnam, my favorite model in the competition right now, "this is not a competition for hot girls and pretty faces, it's for models."

For this episode, I think Nametha from Singapore should have been eliminated. She surely did not follow the brief to bring confidence and variety. Minh Tu could be the First Call Out if not for her bad scores during the challenge. Dorothy deserves it though, she's lively and one can say that she really wants to win.
