UIC boys move to semis of Araw volleyball tournament

THE University of Immaculate Concepcion (UIC) boys' team triumphed over Assumption College of Davao (ACD), 25-23, 28-26, to book a ticket to the semi-finals as the 80th Araw ng Dabaw Sports Festival Inter-Secondary Volleyball Tournament resumed Sunday, April 16 at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center.

The seven-member UIC, who was still playing against Davao City National High School (DCNHS) as of Saturday, April 15, hoped to remain unbeaten as they eye to clinch the top seed spot in pool B.

"Kailangan namin panalunin ang laro against City High para makuha namin ang rank 1 at para sa semi-finals crossover yung rank two ng pool A yung makakalaban namin (We need to win the game against City High to get the rank 1 and in the semi-finals crossover, we will be competing against the rank 2 of pool A)," UIC coach Leonardo Javison Jr., in an interview with SunStar Davao on Sunday, said.

He added that they are well prepared even though some of his players were sidelined due to different reasons.

"Mas may advantage sana kung andito yung Palarong Pambansa veteran na si Jaycon Adevana nagpapa-recover pa (We would have had an advantage if the Palarong Pambansa veteran Jaycon Adevana was here but he’s still recovering) from his recent surgical operation," said Javison, who is eyeing for a Jose Maria College (JMC)-UIC finals.

The UIC leaned on the services of Dux Yambao, JorbynCaasi, Loewe Blanza, Arnie Sabud, Edward Bisquera, Diego Herradura and JericoFandino.

The JMC, meanwhile, whipped Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai 25-14, 25-17.

In the girl's division, Ateneo de Davao University Volleybelles secured a slot for the semi-finals after beating JMC 25-16, 25-15, even as DCNHS girls' advances to the semis after posting a 26-24, 25-10 victory over ACD girls' team.

Other games were still being played as of press time. (ABM)
