Mia Figlia Pasta, authentic yet affordable

IF YOU have been searching for a new destination where you can enjoy your favorite pasta and roast chicken, then Mia Figlia Pasta is the place to be.

Owned by Chit Lascuña and partner Michael Langsdorf, this new resto at One Mariner Place on Mabini corner Mariner Streets, Doña Vicenta Village, Davao City does not only offer great-tasting Italian and French food, but you are also assured that what you are eating is authentic and healthy.

On April 8, I was invited to its opening together with some media friends. We were served with different gastronomic choices that truly made us, especially me, not just full but satisfied as well.

Mia Figlia Pasta, which is the Italian for “My daughter’s pasta,” offers a range of pastas and variety of authentic, Italian homemade sauces that appeal to everyone’s palate. They have pesto, puttanesca, fungi, carbonara, aglio olio pepperoncino and napolitana. Their French-style rotisserie chicken with roast potatoes basted in French herbs is another winner which customers must not miss when visiting the place.

Lascuña, who admitted about her passion for authentic Italian food her entire adult life, said it has been her dream to share this with the Davaoeños.

“I was fortunate to have been trained by an Italian pasta chef for five years, and, now that my children are older, wanted the opportunity to use my skills and knowledge. The result is Mia Figlia Pasta,” she narrated, as she hoped that Davaoeños would agree with her that Italian cooking is one of the world’s great cuisines.

When asked what would make them stand out from other restaurants in the city, Lascuña said, “While it’s true that there are lots of restaurants in Davao that have ‘Italian’ in the name, I have yet to have had truly Italian Pasta or for that matter, authentic French Roast Chicken here.”

“I’ve tried, with Mia Figlia, to offer the Davao public truly authentic Italian taste, by using not only the right mixture of ingredients, but also by using only imported Italian cheeses, tomatoes and herbs. I think that alone makes Mia Figlia unique, and I can only hope that a significant number of Davaoeños will agree with me,” she said.

She further noted that their price range is another reason to try their products.

“I’ve tried to create a modest restaurant with prices that will be affordable to a large number of Filipinos. Many, if not most European-style restaurants here, though some are excellent, are quite expensive and perhaps beyond the reach of many local residents. We’ve tried to make our prices reasonable, so that more people can afford the taste of authentic European food,” Chit said.

Their French Roast Chicken, which is more than a kilo and comes with French herby-roasted potatoes and salad, is large enough for two people to share a reasonably large meal for just 370.

Meanwhile, their pasta servings are generous, and start at only P180, including the two slices of garlic bread.

For customers who want to enjoy authentic Italian Chianti, Mia Figlia Pasta offers it for P850 a bottle.

“So our prices are far lower than other restaurants serving European food. Finally, we provide take-out service and delivery, which most restaurants do not. This allows those who want to share our food with their families the opportunity to call ahead and order, with the assurance that the food will be ready and waiting when they arrive,” Chit said.

Chit is optimistic that Mia Figlia Pasta’s combination of high quality food and reasonable price would appeal to a broad spectrum of Filipino foodies, and of course, foreign residents and visitors.
