San Fernando to push through with old public market rehabilitation

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Mayor Edwin Santiago said Wednesday that the City Government here will push through with the rehabilitation and improvement of the old public market at the Poblacion to give local traders a level playing field in the advent of malls and other big shopping centers.

Santiago and other city officials recently inspected the old public market and discussed with vendors and Fernandino business people their concerns and needs, which are essential in the renovation plan.

"We also received comments that economic activities in the city proper are in disarray. Magulo daw. So will closely study the plan to rehabilitate the old public market to make it more convenient and truly accessible for trading. And we will make sure our Fernandino traders will have a fair and level playing field especially dumadami ang malls at shopping centers sa siyudad," he told Sun.Star Pampanga.

Santiago stressed that malls and shopping centers are very helpful in boosting the city's economy, but local small and medium entrepreneurs should also be given opportunities for growth.

"Malls are very helpful to the city’s economy. Pero sabi nga natin, Fernandino first. Kaya dapat parehas ang opportunities. Pero dapat din may disiplina--walang vendors sa sidewalk, ma-solve ang traffic problems, malinis ang siyudad dahil ito ay para sa lahat," he added.

Santiago said the city planning office will immediately draft the plan once the necessary data is gathered. (JTD)
