MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte -- The Provincial Government of Southern Leyte invited members of the Municipal Solid Waste Management Board in the province to participate in the scheduled Earth Forum throughout the province in celebration of Earth Day.

Earth Day which celebrated every year falls on the 22nd of April, this year, it was learned.

In a letter, Governor Damian Mercado said that the Provincial Government is highlighting the campaign on solid waste management in the entire province wherein several activities are being lined-up to emphasize its importance.

The earth forum are set on the following dates such as: April 18 – St. Bernard and Silago, April 19 – Libagon and San Ricardo, April 25 - Maasin and Limasawa, and on April 29 will be in Malitbog and Sogod areas.

Resource persons during the scheduled Earth Forum will include representatives from the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) to discuss on Sanitary Landfill; the Commission on Audit (COA) to talk about the role of their department regarding Republic Act 9003 or known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000; and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) which will discuss on the legal basis and mandates of the lcoal government units particularly the SWM Board on Ecological Solid Waste Management System.

Topics to be discussed also include climate change, updates on solid waste management implementation at the local level, among other related matters concerning environment.

Southern Leyte’s Earth Day Forum is dubbed as, “Go Green, Clean and Healthy Southern Leyte.” (PIA)
