SAN SIMON -- In celebration of the 117th anniversary of Philippine Independence here, Mayor Leonora Wong encouraged everyone on Thursday, especially government officials to be modern heroes.

"Let's do what our heroes did for our nation," Wong said as she described this year's theme 'Triumphs through Reforms, Within Nation's Reach'," she said.

"Let us do what our heroes did by showing unity, bravery and integrity in our goals and endeavors. One town, one Nation, one united Philippines," she added.

Vice Mayor Honorato Almario, for his part, retold stories about the Philippine revolution to inspire Simonians to imitate the bravery of heroes.

The Municipal Government held a weeklong observation of Independence Day by hanging flags around the town hall.

Wong and Almario, together with other municipal officials, department heads, barangay captains, district supervisors and principals, Philippine National Police and representatives from civil society organizations, wore the traditional Barong Tagalog and Saya to honor Filipino pride, history and patriotism.

"We should not forget our history and the good deeds of our heroes," Wong said.

The wreath laying and releasing of balloons that signifies freedom concluded the event.
