Civil Defense orients chief executives

IN A bid to spread awareness, the Office of Civil Defense-Cordillera Administrative Region (OCD-CAR) held an orientation on pre-disaster risk assessment and incident command systems last week.

OCD-CAR director Andrew Alex Uy said the orientation aims to help the different chief executives in the region to know more on their roles when there is a disaster that might arise.

“Napakaimportante ang role ng mga chief executives dahil sila ang chairperson ng local disaster risk reduction and management council. Sa response, sila ang responsible officials with other line agencies kasi partner rin natin sila (The role of chief executives is important becuase they are the chairperson of the local disaster risk reduction and management council. In response, they are the responsible officials with other line agencies since we are partners with them too)," Uy said.

He said the orientation will help chief executives to fill the information gaps during disasters in a bid to improve disaster mitigation plans, response and rehabilitation in the community and communication with the authorized agencies.

The OCD-CAR director added that he expects the local government units (LGUs) and partner agencies to improve since they have participated in risk reduction and management.

Uy also said there are still LGUs who have not completed their disaster risk reduction and management plans.

“Kailangang may contingency plans ang ating mga LGUs, kailangan nilang i-update at palakasin ang kanilang mga plans para kung may disaster ay mas handa sila at alam ang gagawin sa communication (Our LGUs need to have contingency plans and boost them so they know how to communicate and be prepared during disasters)," Uy added.
