Davao booters open title retention bid on high note

DAVAO Region Athletic Association (Davraa) elementary football team opened its title-retention bid by eking out a 3-0 shutout victory over Calabarzon at the start of the Palarong Pambansa 2017 at St. Anthony College in Antique over the weekend.

Palaro 2016 elementary football champion Davraa relied on Jhojie Fernandez who knocked in two goals as teammate Emmanuel Loquero added one goal to help lift the Rey Henry "Ewee" De Leon-coached squad take the debut win.

De Leon earlier told SunStar Davao that they will take each game at a time and not pressure his boys to defend the crown.

Davraa, however, held Mimaropa to a scoreless draw in bracket A when action resumed on Monday.

"May ilang finishing natin na hindi na convert into goals. Sayang nga eh," De Leon said in a text interview, adding that players of both teams have similar height.

The seasoned coach also said, "It's difficult to say na makukuha natin ulit ang gold pero sana makuha natin."

Next game is set tomorrow at 8 a.m. opposite Central Visayas.

The Davraa secondary football team forced a 2-2 standoff with Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR) behind the back-to-back goals of team captain Justin Luis Uy of Ateneo de Davao University at the University of Antique.

Alex Adolfo is coaching the Davraa secondary booters who were pitted against Zamboanga Peninsula Region as of Monday evening.
