Cancer Fair 2017: Eat, Pray

THE first in Mindanao, Cancer Fair 2017, hosted by the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology took place at the SM City Davao Annex Event Center on April 17, where selected pharmaceutical groups and chemotherapy nurses served as facilitators.

The event was highlighted with interactive activities, informative booths and healthcare professional’s on site to help answer questions.

Ongoing entertainment showcased a touching opening contemporary dance number from Locsin Dance Studio Alumna and a principal dancer of Ballet Manila as well as a member of Cirque De Soleil, Ms. Kris-Belle Paclibar and a cultural presentation by UIC Ignatian Cultural Dance Troupe.

To the delight of so many, breast cancer patient advocate and 1973 Miss Universe Margie Moran-Floirendo graced the event.

Moran-Floirendo is also known for her undying support for “I Can Serve Foundation” known for its flagship project “Ating Dibdibin,” the first comprehensive national community-based breast cancer screening program in the Philippines, which aims to save more lives by promoting early breast cancer detection.

Singer/songwriter/host of the group Zee Acts, Zion Aquino, makes good use of his mellow trills and soothing vocal texture in his rendition of “Warrior is a Child.”

The chart-topping track is an inspirational hymn acknowledging that even those who appear to be the strongest need a refuge and a “quiet place to rest.”

Zion is a cancer warrior himself, which I have so much admiration for, as he continues to fight cancer yet still exudes a positive vibe, by not allowing cancer to define him. His album featured a duet with Yeng Constantino entitled “Liwanag.”

Manoeuvres dancer and actor Joshua Zamora led the Zumba to the delight of medical practitioners, and patients alike, he was also joined by Metro Lifestyle Aerobics instructors, Ian Dela Cerna, Aldrel Castro, Ryan Guillamaso, JR Abadilla, Joy Manog, and Rona Ozaraga. Jollibee and Zoofari Mascots also joined in the fun for a special dance in the afternoon show.

Joining the roster of talents onstage were husband and wife team, “Acoustic Theory Band”, local beauty queens, Mutya ng Dabaw 2016 Ms. Molly Teodoro and Mutya ng Dabaw 2017, Reina Kobayashi.

Chef Alex Destriza of Marco Polo Hotel did a cooking demo for “Mindful Eating and Healthy Cooking” segment with Dr. Bill Ramos. Chef Destriza vowed the crowd with his Easy Flavourful Chicken Fajitas.

Cancer survivors and family members hailing from different parts of Mindanao were present during the occasion, which showcased pocket events, and lectures delving into cancer nutrition and on cancer screening, the event also featured fashion show of cancer survivors with The Limited by Jan Vega, inspirational talks spearheaded by Dr. Judy Gatmin-Yuzon, Joy Tipudan of House of Hope as well as Mrs. Emy Gatmaitan and daughter Denise Moriel.

Dr. Felycette Gay Martinez-Lapus and Dr. Honey Saria Abarquez gave the welcome message and closing remarks. Special mention to Metro Davao Medical and Research Center Oncologist Dr. Nina Htun Javier for the invitation.

Joining me onstage was Davao Host Darwin Baguio Gevero, who was gracious enough to lend his talent for a good cause. Indeed the experience was both emotional and enriching, with gatherings such as these, may there be more people who will be involved to help and provide reliable cancer information to empower patients and develop cancer awareness programs that teach preventive measures and lifestyle changes.
