Coast Guard rescues 4 fishermen in Guimaras

ILOILO CITY -- Four fishermen were rescued by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Tuesday morning, April 25, after their boat capsized while fishing in the waters of Barangay Buyo in Jordan, Guimaras.

Joint teams of the PCG substations in Iloilo and Guimaras rescued boat captain Melvic Pompirada, 37, and crewmen Joe Russel Sumagaysay, 20, Melfred Pompirada, 28, and Emilio Pompirada, 32; all residents of Miraculous Zone 6, Barangay Calumpang, Iloilo City.

Chief Petty Officer Roque Borja, PCG-Iloilo Fishing Port Complex substation commander, said the group went fishing on board MBCA Jonie and Juvin around 11:00 p.m., Monday, near the anchorage area of a foreign vessel in Jordan, Guimaras.

The group have just thrown their fishing net when the boat tilted and capsized. The fishermen were able to hold tightly at the capsized boat until morning.

PCG-Iloilo received a call from St. Rafael Uno, a 2GO vessel, around 8:00 a.m., Tuesday, informing of a capsized boat when it passed by the area.

The rescued fishermen were later brought to the substation in Iloilo Fishing Port complex looking very tired after staying in the seawater for about nine hours.

Borja said the fishermen were not hurt and already sent home. (PNA)
