The Filipino twist

HOME is where the heart is and when it comes to Filipino food, even the mere pages of Golden Cowrie’s menu hold Filipinos’ hearts. However, for this year, Golden Cowrie reinvents itself and opens its doors to a different take on its usual dishes.

Adding its own twist to Filipino dishes without abandoning its real identity, Golden Cowrie opens its newest branch at the Garden Area of Ayala Center Cebu. Having satisfied the Cebuano palate for years now, the restaurant adds to its 30 branches a different side, Golden Cowrie Filipino Kitchen, establishing modern Filipino cuisine.

Golden Cowrie Filipino Kitchen reinterprets classic Filipino dishes and at the same time still offers Golden Cowrie patrons’ all-time favorites.

The new dishes include Sizzling Chicharon and Red Egg, a crunchy and savory combination of chicharon and red egg (itlog maalat) with a pinch of chili. Vegetarian Humba is also a head turner as it provides a vegetarian version of the classic favorite. Tahong in Coconut Milk is a creamy seafood choice as it proudly presents imported mussels cooked in coconut milk.

Pinaupong Manok, a traditional way of roasting chicken, is also featured in the Filipino Kitchen’s menu where the chicken is slowly bathed in hot oil and cooked in salt. Pomelo Salad perfectly refreshes the palate after all the savory food with pomelo and singkamas tossed in calamansi dressing topped with crunchy dried squid.

Zarzuela de Mariscos is a new dish, which is seafood cooked in light tomato sauce, olive oil, tomatoes and coco wine. Cab-Cab with smoked Bangus Pate creates a different mood to one’s palate as it provides the usual delicacy of crispy fried cassava crackers but is dipped in smoked bangus pate.

Golden Cowrie Filipino Kitchen also serves Pinaugang Balbacua, a twist on the classic Cebuano favorite with oxtail braised in aromatics and served in thick-flavorful sauce, quite different from the soupy balbacua one has always known.

The usual favorites like Baked Bantayan Scallops, Sinigang na Hipon, grilled Tuna Belly, Crispy Pata and most importantly its Lechon Belly, are all still present in the newly opened branch.

To seal the deal (or meal), is the refreshing Cucumber and Green Mango Agua Fresca, which is a refreshing drink and a detoxifier blend of cucumber and green mango.
