Davao vice mayor condemns NPA attacks

DAVAO City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte on Tuesday, May 2, has condemned the attacks of the New People's Army (NPA) last April 29 in Barangay Mandug.

Duterte said in a privilege speech that Larry Timbal Buenafe, 34, a fish vendor who was injured during the attack, is now fighting for his life in the hospital.

"Just like Larry, many other Filipinos just wanted to live their normal lives and spend time with their families and loved ones. This simple dream is now being endangered by this so-called People's Army," he said.

Duterte also questioned the intention of NPA, as they admitted that they are behind the simultaneous attacks in Lapanday and was behind the improvised explosive device (IED) that hit Larry.

"The NPA had been waging this war for decades now and all along they are claiming that they're doing it for the masses. For the Filipino people who do not have the means and the strength to fight a despotic government. For people like Larry. Wala pa ba mo gipang kapoy anang inyong pakigbisog? (Are you not tired of fighting?)," he said.

Duterte said that the government under his father President Rodrigo Duterte has been offering peace, and these groups continue to wage war.

He said that government officials like him are mandated to protect the people and they have all the resources.

"We want peace, but we are also mandated by our sworn duty to serve the Dabawenyos," he said.

Duterte, however, said that like the President who continues to offer peace, they will also apply the same here in Davao.

"In Davao City, despite what happened, we are not closing our doors for a genuine peace that would benefit each and every Filipino," he said.

Duterte warned NPAs that this opportunity for peace may only last within the Duterte administration, and the group may never again come across an administration like Duterte.

He also said that the City Council of Davao is throwing its support on whatever actions to be taken by Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio to prevent future atrocities.

"Ang konseho suportado ang bisan unsa mang lakang ni Mayor Inday Sara Duterte aron nga batukan ang NPA ugma undang na ang mga pagpanghasi niini sa katawhan, pagpangilkil, ug uban pang terorismong aktibidad (The Council supports the actions taken By Mayor Sara Duterte to fight the NPA and for them to stop the harassment and future atrocities)," he said.

During the session, Davao City Councilors Danilo Dayanghirang, Nilo Abellera Jr., Jimmy Dureza and Diosdado Mahipus Sr. also shared their sentiments regarding the NPA attack.

Dureza said that he will pass a resolution for the City Council to request the President to establish a local peace panel not just in Davao City but nationwide to settle rifts between groups.
