Duterte thanks Xi Jinping over Chinese navy's visit to PHL

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping over the phone for inviting him to visit China's guided missile destroyer Chang Chun docked in Davao City, Malacañang said Wednesday.

Malacañang, in a photo release, confirmed that Duterte had a phone call with Xi, only to discuss Chinese Navy's three-day goodwill visit to the Philippines.

"President Rodrigo Roa Duterte speaks with People Republic of China President Xi Jinping in a call from Davao City on May 3," Palace said.

"The Philippine President thanks the Chinese for inviting him to tour the People's Liberation Army Navy Flagship Destroyer Chang Chun docked at the Sasa Port in Davao City early this week for a goodwill visit to the Philippines," it added.

Duterte toured China's Chang Chun on Monday, describing the warship as "luxury hotel."

The international arbitral court's ruling on the South China Sea disputes was not mentioned as among the issues discussed by the two leaders.

Malacañang could not provide further details what other issues had been discussed during the phone conversation of Xi and Duterte.

Duterte is scheduled to visit to China on May 14 to 16 to participate in the "One Belt, One Road Forum." His first visit to China was in October 2016. (SunStar Philippines)
