565 flee homes due to heavy rains in Davao City

AT LEAST 565 individuals were forced to flee their homes while some were stranded due to flooding brought by heavy rains in Davao City on Wednesday evening.

Leoncio Cirunay, regional director of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD)-Davao, said Thursday, May 4, that the water level warning in the southern part of the city was raised to "red" that requires the preemptive evacuation of residents in that area.

Based on the water level warning bulletin as of 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Lipadas River was still on a normal level (green) along with Davao River, Bunawan River and Lasang River while Talomo River is on a red level.

Affected barangays were Barangay Matina Aplaya, Matina Crossing, Talomo, Dumoy and San Antonio Agdao.

Cirunay said 82 families took temporary shelter in different designated evacuation centers like barangay hall and some elevated parts to secure themselves from the knee-deep flood.

OCD immediately activated their Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and directed all Disaster Risk Reduction Management Center (DRRMC) to monitor the effects of the heavy rains and instructed the responders to assist the evacuation.

As of Thursday, May 4, the water level slowly subsided and the residents have already returned to their reapective homes. No casualties were reported.

Flooding was also reported in several parts of the city and in downtown area.

The flood triggered moderate to heavy traffic along J.P. Laurel Avenue as the water rose along Victoria Plaza, as a result of which, some public utility vehicle were stalled.
