DOTR: Jeepney phase out called off

JEEPNEY drivers and operators in Cordillera can now have a sigh of relief after the Department of Transportation (DOTR) assured there will be no phase out of the public utility vehicle.

DOTR-Cordillera assistant director Mohammad Nasser Abbas said the drivers and operators should not worry anymore since their call against the phase out was called off.

Abbas said the DOTR will continue still help modernize public vehicles, including jeepneys.

“In our modernization program, the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) has released P1 billion which will help owners to improve and modernize their vehicles. It means there will be no more phase out," Abbas said.

DOTR-Cordillera is still waiting for the memorandum coming from their central office how the jeepney owners will avail of the program.

"We are still waiting how the mode of transaction is and how we will be helping them," Abbas said.

DOTR-Cordillera will be having a transportation summit to all transport sectors in the region. They will be called to tackle on the modernization plans of the government.

Abbas said that part of the modernization program of the government is to urge the use of electric or solar powered jeeps in the region which is environmental friendly.

"We heard there is an electric jeep which is strong. This could be efficient in mountainous areas like Baguio City and other areas," Abbas said.

"We want to provide a job to Filipinos that is why we want to modernize our transportation system. We want them to cooperate for the better modernization program," Abbas added.
