Zion’s awakening

ZION Aquino is a singer/ songwriter who also dabble into hosting. He has a critically-acclaimed album produced by Star Records in his sleeve.

His distinctive powerful and soulful vocals can be heard in his songs “Ever My Only Love”, “Defenseless,” “Give You My Heart and Soul” and “Liwanag” which is a duet with his friend, Yeng Constantino.

Last April 23, he graced the 2017 Cancer Fair organized by the Philippine Society of Medical Oncologists held at the Annex area of SM City Davao.

Zion is one of the many cancer survivors spreading the message of hope among his fellow survivors, their family and caregivers.

During a backstage interview, Zion recounted his days as an up and coming singer, it wasn’t rosy.

“I was insecure about myself when I started getting these things, it was different, I was mad at the world, always angry,” says Zion.

He eventually would leave music to focus on his career in the advertising industry.

In 2012, he was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer, a type of cancer which starts to occur in the colon rectum. It has recently recurred and is now at stage 4.

“And you know getting diagnosed with cancer changed my life. It showed me to be happy, it’s not the end of your life, we have to be very very happy,” Zion says, keeping an upbeat view of life, one which the Cancer Fair is trying to share with its theme Eat. Pray. Love. Celebrate Life.

“The diagnosis of cancer does not mean it’s a death sentence, a diagnosis of cancer means there is life after the diagnosis,” Says Dr. Chita Nazal Matunog, a Davao-based oncologist who attended and supported the Cancer Fair.

For Zion, cancer has brought him back to his music.

“When I got sick, I realized I can do something with my music. I can actually use music to raise funds for others and raise awareness about cancer,” Zion says.

In 2012, Zion gained acclaim when he joined the Advertising Idol, a singing contest among employees of the advertising industry. He participated in the contest, toting a colostomy bag as he as undergoing treatment for colorectal cancer. He was given a special prize as a tribute to his indomitable spirit.

He wrote a song titled “Liwanag” which was inspired by his experience and which he hopes would be an inspiration for his fellow cancer survivors. The song was performed with his good friend Yeng Constantino.

“Hawakan mo aking kamay

Bayaan mong maging gabay

At kung daan man lukubin ng dilim

Ako ay ilaw mo rin.”

Zion has resigned from his job as a senior accounts manager in an advertising firm and is focusing on his music full-time and with his gigs and performances, he shares his advocacy of awakening and hope. (special thanks to Yvonne Plaza Chua)
