Cebuanos struggle in Asean chess tourney

CEBUANO bets Jerish John Velarde, Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano and Laila Nadera continued with their struggles after Round 6 of the 16th Asean + Age Group Chess Championships in Singapore yesterday.

The eight-year old Velarde, who started at the sixth rank, dropped to the to the 18th place despite winning his Round 6 opponent Dan Hoang Tung Nguyen of Vietnam to earn a 3.5 points total in the Open Under 10 category competition.

Before the sixth round win, Velarde drew three matches, won one and lost one match.

Sevillano meanwhile, climbed to seventh place after drawing with CM Minh Hoang Le of Vietnam in Round 6.

Currently Sevillano three matches, drew two and lost one game entering Round 7 in the Open Under 16 category.

Same with Nadera who is currently on the third place.

Nadera earned only a total of 3.5 points after six matches courtesy of three wins, two loses and a draw.

Today, they will continue to chase the elusive victory as they play their respective Round 7 matches.
