Ex-Speaker De Venecia is special envoy for intercultural dialogue

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has appointed former House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. as the special envoy for intercultural dialogue, according to Executive Salvador Medialdea.

The former House leader's appointment paper was dated April 17.

Bolivar said De Venecia was appointed "in recognition of his active role in promoting inter-cultural and inter-faith dialogue for many years."

Bolivar said as special envoy, the former Speaker's duties are: to advise the government regarding inter-cultural dialogue issues; and to make recommendations to the government on how to advance Philippine interests as regards to this issue.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Robespierre Bolivar said De Venecia would hold the post from April to September.

De Venecia had held the Speakership of the House of Representatives five times, serving from 1992 to 1998 and from 2001 to 2008. He ran for president in 1998 but lost to then Vice President Joseph Estrada. (SunStar Philippines)
