Financial aid for Lawin victims in the works

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Cordillera Administrative Region assured victims of the Super Typhoon Lawin will receive their financial assistance next month.

The DSWD-Cordillera regional director Janet Armas said she already talked with the manager of the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) to fix the mode of distribution of the fund to the Lawin victims.

“We will be giving the additional P5,000 to those with partially damaged houses and additional P25,000 to those with total damaged houses in the region,” Armas said.

The DSWD-Cordillera will be releasing a total P294,505,000 to the victims in the region. Families in Kalinga will be receiving a total of P140, 255,000, P78,485,000 in Abra, P55,045,000 in Apayao, P8,255,000 in Benguet, P7,690,000 in Mountain Province, and P4,777,000 in Ifugao.

“Through the assistance fund, we hope these can help them rebuild structures damaged by one of the strongest typhoons we experienced,” Armas added.

Armas said the LBP could possibly give cash cards to the victims to easily access the financial assistance with any bank or automated machines in their municipality.

The DSWD official said no final date yet is set for the release of funds next month.

“In our timeframe we hope we could release the fund to them on June. We do not want to prolong the agony of the victims,” Armas said.

Earlier, the DSWD has already released the first batch of the fund.

There are 3,298 destroyed houses and 42,597 damaged houses in the region after the onslaught of the typhoon.

Kalinga has the most number of damaged structures and the least was Ifugao. Aside from houses, agriculture, tourism and infrastructure projects were also affected by the super typhoon.
