Philpost, Diocese of Butuan launch commemorative stamp

BUTUAN CITY -- The Philippine Postal Corporation (Philpost), together with the Diocese of Butuan, launched a commemorative stamp here celebrating the diocese’s 50 years on Wednesday afternoon, May 10.

“This launching on the Golden Jubilee celebrate of the Diocese of Butuan commemorative stamp is very significant as it is part of the history of the Philippines and the historical commission,” Joel Otarra, postmaster general and chief executive officer of Philpost, said.

Otarra emphasized that the Diocese of Butuan has already existed for 50-years.

“Commemorative stamps like this are made for such historical significance,” he said.

Otarra said that there are three kinds of stamps, the commemorative, the special, and the ordinary stamp. Community milestones of immense historical importance are usually celebrated by having a commemorative stamp made.

The Philpost official revealed that 1,000 commemorative stamps were printed for the occasion.

Bishop Juan de Dios Pueblos of the Diocese of Butuan thanked the guests for the support for the Golden Jubilee Commemorative stamps.

“Certainly, people nowadays communicate through emails and other social media. But communicating by post makes both traditional and patience a persistent value,” said Dios Pueblos.

Dios Pueblos added that the likeness of the Cathedral of the Diocese at the stamp should remind people that Saint Joseph, the Diocese’s patron, “always intercedes for us.”

The Diocese has some 53 parishes and quasi-parishes. Its first bishop, the late Msgr. Carmelo DF Morelos, took on the leadership of the Diocese from its establishment until 1994 when he was nominated to the Archdiocese of Zamboanga.

Monsignor Juan de Dios Pueblos of the Diocese of Kidapawan succeeds him as the second bishop of the Diocese.
