Hinoba-an town supports ban of Coke products

THE Municipal Government of Hinoba-an is also supporting the campaign to boycott Coca-Cola products believed to contain high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).

Mayor Ernesto Estrao said the Municipal Council members unanimously passed a resolution supporting the campaign to boycott Coke during its session on May 2.

Estrao said the unabated importation of HFCS, an alternative sweetener, is detrimental to the sugar industry as many Negrenses are dependent on it.

The Municipal Council resolution said HFCS is “very cheap, highly subsidized and came from genetically modified organisms which aside from its harmful effects of the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity among our people, causes extreme damage to the sugar industry of the province thus resulting to poor economy and low employment most especially to small scale sugarcane growers.”

The resolution added that numerous studies showed that increased consumption of sugar sweetened foods and beverages is linked to overweight and obesity among children and adults, and to consequent development of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes.

Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. first declared the ban on the sale and sponsorship of Coca-Cola products in this year's Panaad sa Negros Festival, which prompted other localities to follow. These were Hinigaran, Isabela, La Carlota City, Pontevedra, Barangay Talotog of Murcia town, Bago City, and Binalbagan.
