Drop in prices of Guimaras mangoes expected this peak season

THE prices of Guimaras mangoes, dubbed as the sweetest in the world, are expected to drop even after the Manggahan Festival.

Provincial Agriculturist Ronnie Morante said the high production was expected until this June. But they are expecting that they can now have a year-round production.

From as high as P250 a kilo during off season, Morante said the farm gate price reduced to about P60 a kilo and there were stalls that sell P80 per kilo. Prices of mangoes on sale at the Manggahan Trade Fair have been pegged between P100 to P130 a kilo.

Morante said they looked forward to some 11,500 metric tons of production this year although their early batch was damaged during the last quarter of 2016. The production last year reached 11,800 metric tons.

The Guimaras Provincial Government will be extending financial support to the producers to help improve their harvest. Also, the local government unit is planning to secure crop insurance for the growers.

The Provincial Government found out that while the growers were doing most of the jobs, yet their income share was only at 20 percent that they could get after four months. Traders, meanwhile, have 17 percent share in one week while processors get 46 percent of the income share in just two weeks.

Mango growers can get support from the Provincial Government up to the

third induction.

Some 6,502 hectares of agricultural land in Guimaras are planted with mangoes. At present, there are around 285,480 mangoes on their fruit-bearing stage. The province has 7,252 mango growers.
