Davao official: Textbooks not enough to cater all students

PUBLIC schools in Davao City still lack textbooks despite the increased budget provided for the upcoming school year 2017-2018, a city councilor said on Tuesday, May 16.

Davao City Council Education Committee Chair Councilor Pilar Braga said during Pulong-pulong ni Pulong media conference on Tuesday, that although the Special Education Fund has a bigger budget for textbooks of public school students in Davao this year, it is still not yet sufficient to cater to all because more students are enrolling.

Braga said they prioritize those who send formal requests.

"But it should not be worried about because we in the government are doing our best to cope up with this and hopefully provide all our students their necessary books," she said.

Braga also thanked those who gave book and cash donations from different groups and individuals during the Brigada Eskwela 2017, adding that these books will surely be sent to schools.

Chief Education Program Supervisor of Department of Education Teresita Del Valle said that their national office has provided additional teaching staff.

For this school year Davao City got an additional 372 vacant teaching positions for elementary and high school levels and also vacancies for non-teaching educators for the senior high school program. Application is still ongoing to fill up the positions.

"Nevertheless, if we find it necessary to hire more in our city, we can just contact the national office for the mandate," Braga said.
