DENGUE cases in Bacolod City increased by 103 percent in the first five months of the year compared to the number during the same period in 2016, records of City Health Office (CHO) showed.
Dr. Grace Tan, head of the CHO Environmental Sanitation Division, said on Wednesday, May 17, that from January to May 13 this year, Bacolod has a total of 297 dengue cases, from only 146 cases in the previous year.
From January to May 13 this year, four young children died due to dengue.
In January, a 10-year-old boy in Barangay Sum-ag, and five-year-old boy in Barangay Singcang-Airport succumbed to the mosquito-borne disease.
In March, an eight-year-old boy in Barangay Granada also died, and on May 11, a two-year-old boy in Barangay 14 passed away as well.
Of the 297 cases, Barangay Handumanan recorded the highest number with 31 cases.
Barangay Mansilingan has 25 cases; Barangays Alijis and Mandalagan, 21 each; Barangays Estefania and Granada, 20 each; Villamonte, 19; Sum-ag, 18; Tangub, 17; Taculing 16; Vista Alegre, 15; Banago, 12; Singcang-Airport, 11; Pahanocoy, nine; Barangay 1, seven; Barangays 2 and Bata, four each; Barangay 27, three; and Barangays 23, 35, 37, and Cabug, two each.
Tan said most of the victims suffered from fever for more than five days.
In preparation for the opening of classes next month, the CHO also joined the “Brigada Eskwela” by conducting fogging in various public elementary and high schools.
Tan said that next week, they will continue fogging in public schools.
She added that those who have symptoms of dengue such as fever, headache, severe joint and muscle pain, fatigue, vomiting, and skin rashes should seek medical attention immediately.
