Bank holds forum on e-commerce, digital marketing

UNIONBANK and its consortium partners conducted the Ureka E-Cadet Program participated by over 200 college students in different state college and universities in Northern Luzon at the University of the Cordilleras in Baguio City, May 19.

The "one-of-a-kind E-Cadet Program" aims to educate college students on e-commerce and digital marketing via "hands own" training.

Aside from training session, Ureka E-Cadets are paired with a "Ureka E-MSME", to get more support to successfully expand their businesses from solely "brick-and-mortar" by going online and thus become "brick-and click.”

Union Bank executive vice–president and head of the center for strategic partnerships Genaro Lapez said the program aims to help students who will soon become entrepreneurs to use e-commerce in their business which is one of the effective tools nowadays.

"With this program, we are involving the students in nation-building through inclusive innovation. The students in the future would be doing business online," he further said.

In the country, over a thousand micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have already launched their own e-commerce business in less than 18 months.

The Ureka Forum is cited as a "showcase private sector effort" by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DITC) in their effort to deliver a minimum of 100,000 MSMEs doing e-commerce by 2020, as promised to the Asean secretariat.

Ma. Crispina Reodica, chief trade and industry development specialist of DTI, said they want to participate in the international community explaining more than half of the population is now into the online world where e-commerce business is timely.

She said e-commerce is an essential tool to improve the business industry in the country from the smallest business to be known worldwide.

It was recalled the first-ever "Ureka Forum" was also held in Baguio City in October 2015. Since then, the forum has completed its national loop after conducting stints in Iloilo and Davao in 2016 and most recently, the Mega Manila Forum last February.
