Mango Radio is back with a new taste and varieties.
Since 2009, Mango Radio has been the source of Christian music and faith-based discussions to radio listeners in Mindanao and some parts of the Philippines. For eight years, they have touched lives and inspired people through their programs related to the teachings of the Bible.
But just recently, the radio station re-branded their broadcast programming from its original faith-based musical and talk programs into much broader themes catering different generations while remaining faithful in communicating the love of God through encouraging, inspiring, and uplifting music and message.
With its tagline, "Communicating the love of God", it emphasizes the advocacy of the station in spreading the good news of God through radio. The station was named after the national fruit of the Philippines, Mango, conveying that their radio station is for all Filipino people.
Floyd Bascones, a radio dj in Mango Radio, during the launching of Mango Radio held at Mango Radio Station in Buhangin Davao City last May 20, shared how the Lord manifested His glory to the current achievement of the radio station.
"Mango Radio started when a Korean Pastor Hong Soon Kyo collaborated with Davaoeño radio enthusiasts and believed that radio broadcasting is the easiest way to communicate the Lord's gospels to the people of Mindanao because of its capacity to reach distant places," Bascones said.
From a daily block time programming, it eventually led to a whole day broadcasting seven days a week in UR 97fm in Davao City, UR 105fm in Cebu City, and UE 103.5 in Zamboanga City. However, Mango Radio had to go off air in 2013 after Viva Live Inc. purchased the Ultimate Entertainment's franchises. Therefore, they continued their broadcast through internet streaming in a private residence in Davao City.
After two years, Mango Radio applied for an FM frequency from RT Broadcast Specialist Philippines (Rtbsp) and started broadcasting first in Zamboanga with recorded programs from Davao City via internet. Then after another year of waiting, Rtbsp granted the frequency 102.7 for Davao City.
"This is the answer of the Lord. He raised us up from the ground as we waited patiently for his answer. And now, we are just beyond happy and excited to share the word of the Lord even more," Michelle Unabia, a radio dj in Mango Radio, said.
With its new broadcast location at an old house they renovated in Buhangin beside Honda Motors Inc. Davao City, there is also a new broadcast programming starting last May 20 onwards.
Jay Locsin, the station manager of Mango Radio, said they want to reach out to those who are non-Christians by incorporating programs and music that are also not Christian in nature but do have motivational and inspiring themes. The songs played are filtered, ensuring that the lyrics are clean and in connection to the advocacy of the station.
On top of its faith-based programs and song choice, this time Mango radio will now have programs like children's program, advocacy and community-based program, K-Pop hour, classical music show, and retro musical show, broadening the coverage among its listeners.
The success has only just started for Mango Radio as they have plans to branch out in a TV channel and produce their own music with local talents in Davao City.
"We want to be the platform for the talented local singers and musicians in Mindanao in which they can use our program in sharing their advocacy," Locsin said.
As a business entity, lawyer Myra Wee, the board of director, defended that Mango Radio is not an organizational station. Thus, they are trying to make ends meet by achieving their goal in sharing the word of the Lord, at the same time maximizing the resources they have.
"For the next months and years for Mango Radio, we want to acquire more fm frequencies in Mindanao and even in Luzon and Visayas. We also welcome those radio stations who want our programs to broadcast in theirs," Myra said.
Mango Radio is currently open for those aspiring DJs who share the same interest of communicating God's love and also for those who want to visit their radio station as a guest.
